Russian Mig Fighter Jet High Altitude Helmet Model GSH-6a Complete With All Electrical and Air Connections Original Wooden Case Included Very Good Condition with no significant flaws Inner and Outer Helmet Pieces Fully Functional*** Helmet Construction and Layout
All elements described below are labelled in the photos for easy identification.
The Soviet GSH-6 Pressurized high altitude flight Helmet was used on MIG-21, MfG-23 and MIG-25 fighter interceptor airplanes as well as for cosmonaut training flights in the 1970s and 1980s
The Helmet consists of an inner soft shell with integrated microphone,  and speakers positioned by the ears.
These components connect to plug inside the helmet and exit at the neck.  The Inner shell is padded at the crown for added protection.
The outer shell is hard plastic with an air tight visor.   Once the visor latch is opened the visor is pushed up and out of place automatically by an internal spring.  The visor has embedded hair fine heating elements to prevent condensation from obscuring the pilot's view.
A sun screen can be rotated into and out of view underneath the visor, by turning a lever beneath the  left edge of the visor.
In addition, the oxygen supply is drawn across the back of the visor to further remove moisture.  To achieve this, oxygen intake and exit lines enter the helmet bottom right and left  respectively
The base of the helmet accepts a clamped ring which is spanned by a zippered neck skirt and air tight rubber seal.  The seal has  a hole slightly smaller than the size of the pilot's neck.  The pilot presumably pushes his head through the seal and into the helmet.
***This particular helmet appears complete, and fully functional, though we are unable to test the electronics.  But given the fine mechanical and cosmetic condition there is no reason to assume otherwise. History Of The GSH-6a
This is a Soviet era very high altitude and early astronauts’ helmet.  These helmets were worn by both Mig25 and Mig31 pilots whenever they were to fly at high altitudes above 50,000 ft.  The helmet is configured for Mig25 and Mig 31 which flew routinely between 70,000 and 80,000 ft.  Initially these planes were used as high altitude interceptors designed to shoot down the American B70 Valkyrie Mach 3 high altitude strategic bomber.
The Russians then switched the mission of M25 and M31 to that of high altitude reconnaissance although the Mig31 was still kept in service as a high altitude interceptor for the purpose of trying to shoot down the American SR71 reconnaissance aircraft which routinely flew above 80,000 ft.
