sports prints by C. Don Ensor, companion prints are "Little Shoes, Big Dreams", "Just for Kicks", and "High Hoops". Print Info: “I was reminded of a
“Gladiator” when painting the shoulder pads in this painting, thus the
name. Of all the sports, American
football requires the most protective equipment. It probably require the most grueling
training and strength of all the sports. Football in America is just
over 100 years of age. It is an
outgrowth of rugby and soccer. It is
played on a grass field, or artificial turf. The length of the field is measured in five yard sections covering 100
yards. Goal posts at each end are 24 feet
wide with a crossbar at 10 feet high. A
touchdown (6 points) is scored when the ball is carried or passed into a ten
yard end zone. A field goal (3 points)
is scored when the ball is kicked between the goal posts ove the cross bar. An extra point (1 point) is scored after the
touchdown by kicking the ball from the 3 yeard line in college and the 2 yard
line in professional football. A two
point conversion can be scored after a touchdown in high school and college
play by running or passing the ball into the end zone from the 3 yard
line. A two point safety can be scored
by the defensive team when a tackle is made on the offensive team in their own
end zone. A team consists of 11 players
on both the offensive and the defensive teams. Usually a player will play only on the defensive or offensive team,
especially in the professional ranks. In
high school and college, a few exceptional players will play on both defense
and offense. Offensive teams have four downs
to move the ball 10 yards, if they do, they continue to have the ball for first
downs until they cross the goal line. The defensive team tries to stop the first downs by preventing the
offense to move the ball 10 yards in four plays. If this is done the team with the ball must
kick the ball to the opposing team, thereby affording a scoring opportunity to
them. After a touchdown, the ball is
kicked from the forty yard line to the opposing team, also affording them a
chance to score. In high school, a game consists
of four 12 minute periods, in college and professional there are four 15 minute
periods. Television has made football a
very popular sport. The top college and
professional games are televised weekly. Professional football has become one of the most lucrative sports for
young players out of college. Television rights to professional games involve many millions of dollars
to the teams. It is still a sport to
many little league, high school and college players, but to the professionals,
it is strictly business. We hope you enjoy this
print. Baseball and soccer prints are
available, and basketball will be forthcoming in November, 1986. Thank you Don & Genny Ensor” Print has never been framed and
