This type of helmet was used by the British for many years. Initially it was developed in 1941 but production didn't get underway until 1943. This helmet was designated the MK III until after WWII. This particular MK IV was made in 1952 and would have seen service wherever British troops were stationed at that time. It is in very good shape. the liner is intact and the original chin strap is present. At some time it was painted a dull green (originally it would have been black like the paint on the inside is) and wound up in a stack of helmets. It was the stacking that caused the black marks. I presume that the liner of the helmet on top of this one was deteriorating and left some of the black rubber. It may be possible to remove the green paint with some carefully applied paint remover, but I never felt like taking the chance.
